My name is Maile Naone and I am a senior that will be graduating in May 2011. I'm a human relation major and a womens studies minor. I am in the Pride of Oklahoma and I spin the flags, but I play clarinet in my free time. Music is such a huge part of my life and it's one of my passions. I also hula dance and I truly enjoy doing that when I get the chance. My number one passion is people. There's nothing that I love more than helping people and observing the relationships that people have with each other. I'm in a music sorority named Tau Beta Sigma and I'm an alumni of Phi Mu and I would still be in Phi Mu if weren't for our house getting closed because nations decided to not tell us that some alumni members from a while back had racked up $200,000 in debt while they were attending OU. Anyway, the reason why I wanted to take the body image class is because I struggle with my own body image just like every other girl and boy and I know that this class isn't a self help class, but it's so interesting to see what the reality of body image is and what the media portrays it to be. I'm interested in defining my own definition of body image and being able to share what I learned from this class. As we enter the 21st century, the biggest issues that we face with body image is what the reality of body image is. You see hundreds of pictures of women who are tiny and women believe that the perfect body image is to be a size double zero and I can't lie and say that I haven't been affected by what the media portrays as the "perfect" body image. I feel like the most pressing issues are girls becoming anorexic and not taking care of themselves. I expect to learn from this class a better understanding of what the reality of body image is. I expect to be able to explore what other regions in the world see as the perfect body image through the final project that I will be doing. I expect to have a better understanding body image and all the issues that come along with it. I'm excited to see where this course takes me.
5 questions I want to answer myself for this summer:
1. What is the global standard of beauty?
2. Why do we buy into the media's portrayal of beauty?
3. How many girls/guys in the class actually have issues with their bodies?
4. What will the future bring for women and men when dealing with body image or what will I predict the future will bring?
5. Do men have as many issues with their bodies and women do and what pressures do men feel to have the perfect body image?
